If an intimate image was taken when you were under 18, use youth-specific removal routes

Nude or sexually explicit images created when the person shown was under 18 need youth-specific safety and reporting routes. NCMEC’s Take It Down can create a hash on the user’s device for participating public or unencrypted platforms, while source-site and search-removal requests remain separate steps.

What to do

  1. Do not download, forward or create a new copy of an under-18 sexual image merely to make a report.
  2. If the file is already on your device, review NCMEC’s Take It Down eligibility and instructions.
  3. Save exact public links, usernames, dates and safe surrounding context without redistributing the image.
  4. Report each known public source through the platform’s current child-safety or intimate-content route.
  5. Report eligible Google Search results through the under-18 reporting process and verify source and search outcomes separately.
Take It Down can help participating services detect matching files; it is not a universal internet deletion tool. If a child is in immediate danger, contact the appropriate local emergency or child-protection authority.

Common questions

Is Take It Down the same as the TAKE IT DOWN Act?

No. Take It Down is an NCMEC service that uses on-device hashing for eligible images or videos; the TAKE IT DOWN Act is a U.S. federal law with separate platform obligations.

Do I have to upload the intimate image to Take It Down?

NCMEC states that the image or video remains on your device and only the hash value is provided to the service.

What if I do not have the image on my device?

You can still pursue source-platform and search-removal routes for known public links. Do not download an under-18 sexual image merely to create a hash.
